Morphological description
Trees or shrubs with 2-lobate or 2-foliolate leaves. Stipules deciduous, intrastipular trichomes ± well developed, sometimes spinescent.

Flowers bisexual or unisexual. Calyx during anthesis spathaceous or splitting into 2-5 lobes. Petals usually 5. Fertile stamens 0-10; anthers ellipsoid-oblong to linear, opening longitudinally.

Pods flat, woody, dehiscent, rarely indehiscent.

Distribution
140 species; pantropical.
