a paired leaf-like structure inserted on the stem on both sides of the leaf-base or base of the petiole, often scale-like, spiny, glandular, or bristle-shaped; usually covering the young leaves in bud; sometimes (very) early caducous and then leaving a more or less distinct scar (check young shoots!)
